Metlakatla awarded $50K federal housing grant

The Alaska Congressional Delegation recently announced grants to various programs in Alaska. Among the grants was a $50,000 Housing Preservation grant to the Metlakatla Housing Authority.
The grant will help the authority repair eight homes owned by low-income elders in that community.
Other grants will help other Alaska communities improve their communication and internet access; support post-secondary education programs in Anchorage and Barrow; and purchase bulletproof vests for 15 jurisdictions throughout the state.

Two tax proposals are in front of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly on Monday. The first would raise the sales-tax cap on single-purchase items from $1,000 to $1,500; the second would establish a boroughwide marijuana excise tax. more
