Metlakatla awarded $50K federal housing grant

The Alaska Congressional Delegation recently announced grants to various programs in Alaska. Among the grants was a $50,000 Housing Preservation grant to the Metlakatla Housing Authority.
The grant will help the authority repair eight homes owned by low-income elders in that community.
Other grants will help other Alaska communities improve their communication and internet access; support post-secondary education programs in Anchorage and Barrow; and purchase bulletproof vests for 15 jurisdictions throughout the state.
After hearing some concerns about awarding a contract to a non-local company for the borough’s debt collection, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly voted Monday to reject a contract with Professional Credit Services of Vancouver, Washington. more
Ketchikan’s Women in Safe Homes is no longer on probation. WISH was put on probation in the fall of 2015 after a site visit by State Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault officials found the emergency shelter out of compliance on several regulations. more
