‘Catastrophic’ culvert failure closes POW road

The U.S. Forest Service has issued an emergency closure order for Sandy Beach Road, also called Forest Service Road 30, on Prince of Wales Island.
According to the Forest Service, a culvert failed at mile 28.4, the Sal Creek crossing, and the road must be closed in that area for safety reasons.
No motor vehicle traffic is allowed within 50 feet from either direction. Foot traffic also is prohibited because the road above the culvert could collapse. The closure remains in effect until further notice.
The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly meets on Monday, and in addition to a presentation from city officials about the switch to chloramine water disinfection, the Assembly will talk about repairs to the roof over the borough’s new pool. more
The Ketchikan City Council approved an additional $100,000 for the water division should additional costs be incurred with the chloramine plant. The council decided against a fence on the bypass. Marty West gives a meeting update. City041814… more
