Veterans, AMHS, young dancers win parade honors

The Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the annual Fourth of July parade awards.

Judges unanimously bestowed the Patriotic Spirit Award to the VFW.

The award for best embodiment of the theme went to the Alaska Marine Highway for its representation of the ferry Fairweather. The theme this year was H2O, an acronym for Highway to Our Future.

The Spirit of Ketchikan Award for the best expression of overall talent went to the kids from Studio Max.

There were several honorable mentions for that last category. They were musher Angie Taggart, the Gymnastics Club, the Class of 2014 and the Rainforest Rollergirls.

Sportfishing remains strong throughout the United States, according to the NOAA 2013 Fisheries of the U.S. Report.
A table of U.S. commercial landings put Ketchikan in 12th place for the pounds landed: about 144 million pounds; and in 11th place for the value of that seafood: about $76 million more
