Two overdue hunters on Prince of Wales Island were rescued over the weekend after getting lost in the Winter Harbor area.

According to Alaska State Troopers, a report came in at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday that 47-year-old James Roberts and 24-year-old Steven Roberts, both of Klawock, had hiked into the woods from the road system near Winter Harbor. Troopers report that the hunters were not able to find their way back to the road, and didn’t have the equipment needed to spend the night in the forest.

Klawock Search and Rescue responded to the scene, and determined that a ground search would be ineffective due to the darkness and vast search area. KSAR asked the U.S. Coast Guard for help, and the Coast Guard sent a helicopter with night vision.

The helicopter located the hunters on a mountain. The hunters were transported to the Klawock clinic to be evaluated for possible injuries or hypothermia. They later were released.
