A 51-year-old Hydaburg man has been charged with domestic assault, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and harassment following an incident Tuesday morning.

According to the Alaska State Troopers online dispatch, the Hydaburg Village Public Safety Officer received a report at about 6:30 a.m. that a man was using a splitting maul to break down the front door of a home.

The VPSO reports that when he arrived on scene, the man appeared highly intoxicated and combative. Troopers report that the man had started a disturbance, and family members had been able to lock him out.

The man then allegedly smashed the door with a splitting maul. After getting back inside the home, the man allegedly threatened to kill the family members while still wielding the maul.

According to Troopers, the VPSO attempted to arrest the man, but he forcefully resisted. The VPSO deployed pepper spray and was then able to restrain the man and get him into the back of his police vehicle.

Troopers report that while in the vehicle, the man spit at the VPSO and broke part of the vehicle’s partition. The man was transported to the Craig Jail and remanded into custody without bail.
