5:00 pm Celebration of the Sea Art Walk

The Celebration of the Sea Art Walk is from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Ketchikan.  Many businesses and galleries are having special receptions and performances.  Brochures are available at the Arts Council office or at any participating location.  Highlights include:

  • There will be a discussion about the new art pieces at the Ketchikan Public Library from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the library.  Learn how they went from concept to the finished piece.
  • There is an opening reception from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Main Street Gallery, 330 Main Street, for “YOU Inspire Me.”  The show features the work of Sandy Shepard and Becki Hesedahl.
  • There is an opening reception from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Tongass Historical Museum for “Our Town: The Life and Times of Ketchikan.”
  • The films “The Timber Years” and “The Bush Pilots” will be shown at 5:30 pm, 7:00 pm at 8:30 pm at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center.
  • The Blessing of the Fleet begins at 5:30 pm at the Alaska Fish House Dock.

  • Ketchikan CHARR’s “A Taste of Ketchikan” wine tasting is from 6:30 pm at 8:30 pm at the new KVB Visitors Center on Berth 2.  Proceeds benefit the CHARR Scholarship Fund.
  • CANCELLATION:  The “Cut Plug” 10-minute play festival originally scheduled for May 3rd and 4th has been postponed until the fall.
  • The annual “Shanties of the Sea” celebration begins at 7:30 pm at O’Brien’s Pub.

12:00 pm Half-Marathon Training Group

SPECIAL RUN ON APRIL 20th…Runners and walkers are invited to meet at noon at the Gateway Recreation Center for a special run in support of the runners in the Boston Marathon.  Run or walk whatever distance you’d like.  The half marathon training group is planning 12.  All are welcome.

A half-marathon training group meets each Saturday at noon at the Gateway Recreation Center.    The first session is February 2nd.  All abilities are welcome.  You must sign a waiver to participate.  This training group is co-sponsored by the Ketchikan Running and Walking Club.   Training will help prepare you for the Totem to Totem Half Marathon on May 11th.

We’re going for it again this year! On May 18, 2013, we will be holding our Rain Boot Race once again in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for number of participants in a rain boot race. We will gather at the new library starting at 2 PM, and the race is scheduled to start at 3. The race will go from the library down the 3rd Avenue bypass, ending at the parking lot on 3rd and Washington. We need all participants to fill out a registration form, available at The Plaza and the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo.  (NOTE:  On race day, registration is at 2:30 at the Library).  All participants must use their legal name on the registration forms or we cannot count them as a participant.
