5:00 pm Ribbon Ceremony - Tie One On

As part of our October “Breast Cancer Awareness & Early Detection” efforts, PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center invites you to come tie on a pink ribbon in honor or memory of a loved one.  Join us for a special time of remembrance and give a little to help women in our community with early detection or treatment. You’ll write the name of your loved one and tie it to the tree at the front entrance to the medical center.

We believe resources shouldn’t stop anyone from getting a regular mammogram, so we’re partnering with the First City Council on Cancer to raise funds to cover mammogram costs for those who can’t afford one. Anything you give will help provide mammograms for women in our community.

If you can’t join us for this event, you can still tie your ribbon on throughout the month of October by stopping at the Front Desk, Women’s Health, or our Plaza office.

5:30 pm Museum Expansion Meeting

The Ketchikan Museum Department invites you to participate in a planning meeting on the expansion of the Tongass Historical Museum Monday, October 15th at 5:30 PM at the Ted Ferry Civic Center. Pizza and other refreshments will be provided.

Ketchikan residents will be asked to help refine plans for an expanded Tongass Historical Museum at a public forum on Monday, October 15th.  The City-owned museum will expand into the space in the Centennial Building that is now occupied by the Public Library, after the Library moves into its new building in January 2013.

The workshop-style planning meeting is a follow-up to one held in September, where local folks enthusiastically shared their ideas and visions of an expanded museum with Bettisworth North Architects and Planners.  The Bettisworth firm has been hired by the Foraker Group Pre Development Program to work on the project at no cost to the City.  In this second meeting, Bettisworth North will present drawings of several possible concepts and floor plans developed from ideas expressed at last month’s gathering.  Participants will select one or more preferred alternatives and provide further input on the desired look, feel, and arrangement of building.  The architects will refine those ideas and come back in November with the results.

“Public comment is a critical component in this phase of the museum’s expansion development,” according to Museum Director Michael Naab.  “Everyone who has an interest in the future of Ketchikan’s community museum is encouraged to attend this meeting and offer their input.”

Please call 225-5600 for more information.

7:30 pm KRBD and KAAHC Halloween Bash

Live music by the Black Crabs, dancing, costume and dance contests (prizes!), no-host bar and a DJ playing on into the night…  Doors open at 7:30 pm.  You must be 21 or older to attend.  The cost is $20 per person.    Tickets available at the door or at:  http://ketchikanarts.org/events/category/torch-nights

The Black Crabs are a little rockabilly with some rock and roll too… but also swing, jazz, and even a taste of spaghetti western. This mix of genres comes naturally to The Black Crabs. Originally formed in 2004 to back Rockabilly Queen Wanda Jackson, the band was supposed to be only a summer fling. Instead, it transformed into a full-time proposition. The Trio has played various Seattle festivals including; KEXP’s Rockabilly Ball, Bumbershoot, and The Folk Life Festival.

The Black Crabs deftly navigate the Les Paul-eqsue instrumental Caravan. There’s even the tune best heard under the Big Top, both because of its country-circus beat and subject matter – plus – quite possibly the first ever song about corndogs!

6:00 pm Trunk or Treat

Rotary 2000 presents “Trunk or Treat” from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the parking garage at the First Bank Financial Center, 2030 Sea Level Drive.  This is an annual Trick or Treat event for children and families that is out of the weather and in a safe environment.  Rotarians decorate their vehicles in creepy themes and open the trunks to disperse candy to Halloween revelers. A great family activity.
