The Ketchikan Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce the premiere of two exciting documentary storytelling films about our community and culture.  Ketchikan: Our Native Legacy highlights our rich Native heritage from time immemorial to the present day.  Ketchikan: The Artists focuses on our incredibly vibrant and varied arts community.  The films join Ketchikan: A Fish Story (2010) as part of the successful and ongoing Ketchikan Story Project, stories designed to showcase Ketchikan as an interesting and unique travel destination.  Join us for this double-feature presentation with the production staff on-hand to discuss their process and answer questions.  These films will be shown on Friday, May 4 at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center beginning at 7:00 PM during the Celebration of the Sea.

FREE Safety Training Offered for Commercial Fishermen in Hydaburg

Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) will offer a one day 10-hour commercial fishing vessel safety and Emergency Drill Conductor course in Hydaburg on May 5, 2012 at the Hydaburg School. This course meets the Coast Guard requirements for commercial fishing vessels. It is available FREE to commercial fishermen thanks to support from the Coast Guard, NIOSH, the state of Alaska and individual AMSEA memberships.

Registration for the Sole-Stice Shoe Auction “5K Fun Run/Walk” begins at 9:00 am at StudioMAX, 2544 Tongass Avenue.  The event begins at 10:00 am.  All proceeds benefit the PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center Foundation.  If you register by April 21st, the cost is $25 for adults and $15 for those 12 and under.  After April 21st, the cost is $35 and $20.  Registration forms and information available at StudioMAX.

THE ALASKA STATE COMMISSION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
Presents a Workshop on “BUT I DIDN’T MEAN TO” from 9:00 am to 11:30 am at the Ted Ferry Civic Center.  What Employers and Employees need to know about their responsibilities and rights under Alaska’s law prohibiting discrimination.

This training will explain to employers and employees what workplace conduct violates Alaska’s law prohibiting discrimination. The training will benefit employers, human resource directors, personnel managers, and all staff.

This is a free event.

The Overeaters Anonymous group meets each Wednesday at 5:30 pm at the Pioneer Home, 141 Bryant Street, in the First Floor Conference Room.

Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is not a diet club. There are no dues, fees, or weigh-ins. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop eating compulsively. There is currently just one meeting in Ketchikan, 5:30 pm  Wednesdays. Newcomers always welcome.
