5:00 pm Suicide Prevention Walk
Ketchikan Indian Community is sponsoring an inaugural Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk for Life on Monday September 10th. The walk will start promptly at 5:00 pm from KIC at 2960 Tongass and proceed to The Plaza. At the conclusion of the walk, participants can purchase a short or long sleeve shirt for a $5.00 donation. As part of this event there is a “Life is Beautiful” art contest with prizes for various age categories—all artistic mediums will be accepted. There will be informational booths relating to well-being and mental health at The Plaza after the walk. Those that may want to contribute baked goods and appetizers or want to volunteer for cleanup after the event at The Plaza or have any questions may call Caitlin at 228-9401. St. John’s Episcopal Church is having a fundraising breakfast on Saturday, September 15th, from 8:30 Am to 11:00 AM. A $10.00 donation is suggested. Holly Churchill will teach a wide array of basketry design techniques to create a variety of beautiful textures and woven patterns. There is no prerequisite for this class; projects and activities will cater to each student’s level of weaving skill. Intermediate and advanced students will weave a sampler basket that includes alternating colors, false embroidery, overlay, plaiting, open weave, and several design patterns. When the amber beacons at the lab and on one of the barges are lit, all vessels within sight should go dead in the water and idle or stop their engines until the beacon is extinguished. The Overeaters Anonymous group meets each Wednesday at 5:30 pm at the Pioneer Home, 141 Bryant Street, in the First Floor Conference Room. Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is not a diet club. The Teen Advisory Group or TAG will host “Watch A Banned Book” night beginning at 6:30pm. Teens ages 13 and up are invited to watch the 2007 film “The Golden Compass” which runs 113 minutes and is rated PG-13 and the 2006 film “How to Eat Fried Worms’ which runs 98 minutes and is rated PG. Come to the program and learn why both films have been “banned” and enjoy lots of delicious snacks courtesy of the Friends of the Ketchikan Public Library. Alaska State Parks is holding a Ribbon Cutting Dedication and Picnic at Refuge Cove State Park from noon to 2:00 pm to celebrate the new picnic area, parking and trail improvements at the park.
