5:00 pm Suicide Prevention Walk

Ketchikan Indian Community is sponsoring an inaugural Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk for Life on Monday September 10th.  The walk will start promptly at 5:00 pm from KIC at 2960 Tongass and proceed to The Plaza.  At the conclusion of the walk, participants can purchase a short or long sleeve shirt for a $5.00 donation. As part of this event there is a “Life is Beautiful” art contest with prizes for various age categories—all artistic mediums will be accepted.  There will be informational booths relating to well-being and mental health at The Plaza after the walk.  Those that may want to contribute baked goods and appetizers or want to volunteer for cleanup after the event at The Plaza or have any questions may call Caitlin at 228-9401.

The Annual Kayhi Cross Country Team Fundraiser “A Taste of Ketchikan” is from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Kayhi Commons.  Pasta, breads and salads from over 20 restaurants and the Kayhi Culinary Arts Program are featured.  Proceeds benefit the cross country team.  The cost is $10 per person or $40 for a group of five.   Take out is available.

St.  John’s Episcopal Church is having a fundraising breakfast on Saturday, September 15th, from 8:30 Am to 11:00 AM.  A $10.00 donation is suggested.   Hash, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, English muffins, bagels, juice, tea and coffee are served.  The church is located on the corner of Bawden and Mission Streets.

Funds raised will go towards the purchase of a new computer system for the church.

6:00 pm Tlingit and Haida Language Classes

Ketchikan Indian Community is offering FREE Tlingit and Haida language classes for two weeks beginning September 10th.  There are two separate classes (one Tlingit, one Haida) so you must choose one.  Classes are Monday through Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at 615 Stedman Street.

These are free classes and available to anyone interested in learning native languages.

The Totem Heritage Center in Ketchikan is offering a Basketry Design class with Holly Churchill.

Registration Fee: $150
Materials: $45, (does not include ferns/grasses)

Holly Churchill will teach a wide array of basketry design techniques to create a variety of beautiful textures and woven patterns. There is no prerequisite for this class; projects and activities will cater to each student’s level of weaving skill. Intermediate and advanced students will weave a sampler basket that includes alternating colors, false embroidery, overlay, plaiting, open weave, and several design patterns.

8:00 am Coastal Cleanup

International Coastal Cleanup Day is September 23rd.  “Out in the Rain” will travel by boat to Point Amargura and spend the day beachcombing and collecting marine debris for proper disposal. The cleanup takes place from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.  There is a limit on participants because of the rules about small boats, so sign up early by emailing bob@seacc.org or telephoning 907 401 0270.

The Teen Advisory Group or TAG will host “Watch A Banned Book” night beginning at 6:30pm. Teens ages 13 and up are invited to watch the 2007 film “The Golden Compass” which runs 113 minutes and is rated PG-13 and the 2006 film “How to Eat Fried Worms’ which runs 98 minutes and is rated PG.
