Tommy Joseph Presents Museum Collections: Where and How
Date: February, 15th 2013 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Tommy Joseph, Northwest coast carver, instructor and gallery owner from Sitka, will give a slideshow presentation focusing on Northwest Coast art and artifacts in museum collections. Art and artifacts of the Northwest Coast Native peoples can be found in museum collections in the areas where they were made, but there are also many pieces that are a long way from home. Museums in Chicago, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and other distant North American locations house impressive Northwest Coast Native collections, as do museums in Europe and Russia. Tommy Joseph, renowned Tlingit carver, will share his museum collections research, and will discuss where Northwest Coast artifacts are now located and how they got there. Following the location of artifacts can be a revealing look at the history of contact and how it has affected the culture of our area.
