This weekend, University of Alaska Southeast campuses will award 755 degrees to students during the university’s annual commencement ceremonies.

The first ceremony is Friday night in Sitka, with Ketchikan’s set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ted Ferry Civic Center.

According to Gail Klein of the UAS Ketchikan Campus, 17 students will participate in Saturday’s ceremony, and 34 graduates will be recognized. The commencement speaker will be Biz Robbins, who has retired after 19 years as a UAS adjunct and tutor.

The student speaker will be Helen Mickel, who is graduating with a BA in business and accounting.

Among the awards that will be handed out during Saturday’s Ketchikan ceremony is a meritorious service award to Larry Painter.

The Juneau campus commencement wraps up the weekend on Sunday afternoon.

Juneau’s student commencement speaker is Jasper Nelson, who was born in Ketchikan and grew up in Craig on Prince of Wales Island. He is graduating with a Master of Arts in Teaching with an endorsement in biology.

UAS Chancellor Rick Caulfield and members of the UA Board of Regents will travel to each community to attend commencement ceremonies.
