A 64-year-old California man was found and brought to safety after he had lost his way during a hike on Deer Mountain Thursday.

According to a report from the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad, the man had checked out a SPOT locator beacon from the Ketchikan Visitor Center for a day hike. The beacon was activated a little after 10 p.m. Thursday, about half a mile from the Deer Mountain shelter headed toward Blue Lake.

The report states that KVRS was able to talk briefly with the man via cell phone. He told them he was not injured, but had lost the trail. A team, including a search dog, started up the trail a little after 11 p.m.

At 2 a.m. Friday, the man was found in good health and walked out with the team. Everyone was off the trail at about 5 a.m. Friday.
