A road on Prince of Wales Island that was blocked on New Year’s Day by a massive landslide reopened this week.

Goose Creek/Kasaan Road is the main access road to South Thorne Bay and Kasaan. The slide occurred on U.S. Forest Service land.

The Organized Village of Kasaan was able to obtain $400,000 to pay for clearing work. The funding came from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Clearing work started in late February.

While the main road was blocked, residents used an old, rough logging road. The communities of Kasaan and Thorne Bay worked together to improve that road so it could be used until the main road reopened.
