Due to concerns over spreading coronavirus, many public facilities in the area have been closed, and events cancelled or postponed. Below is a list of closures and cancellations that we know of. This list will be updated as we receive additional information.

Building closures in the Ketchikan area include:

  • The White Cliff Building
  • Ketchikan City Hall
  • Ketchikan Port and Harbors Office
  • Ketchikan Public Utilities offices
  • City of Ketchikan Public Works administration offices
  • Saxman City Hall and Community Center
  • The Gateway Aquatic Center and Recreation Center
  • The Ketchikan Public Library. 
  • Tongass Historical Museum and Totem Heritage Center
  • Pat Wise Animal Shelter
  • Ketchikan Fire Station #1 on Bawden and Station 2 on Tongass Avenue
  • Southeast Alaska Discovery Center
  • Ted Ferry Civic Center
  • All public schools are closed and activities cancelled. Spring break for the Ketchikan School District has been extended until March 30th.
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Rendezvous Senior Day Services. Though meals will still be delivered to its members.
  • Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council / Main Street Gallery

Employees will still report to work and maintain regular business hours.

Ketchikan City Council, Ketchikan School Board and Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly meetings are still taking place, but citizens are encouraged to view meetings on TV or over the internet. Written testimony or questions can be emailed to borough or city clerks prior to meetings.  

The following events are cancelled:

  • First City Council on Cancer’s St. Patrick’s Day Auction
  • The Empty Bowls Dinner
  • The March Monthly Grind
  • Ask UAS Writer’s Block program and other library presentations.
  • The Ketchikan Community Concert Band performance
  • Friday Night Insight programs. Alaska Hummingbird Festival Events have been postponed.
  • Fundraising dinner/auction for Tatsuda’s
  • United Youth Conference

Other closures/meeting changes

  • The UAS Ketchikan Campus is closed, but classes are in session (via distance).
  • The Ketchikan-Saxman Senior Center has cancelled communal meals and group activities.  Meals will be delivered to homes. Call the site manager at 225-6575 for more information.
  • First City Rotary meetings are postponed until mid-April.
  • Rotary 2000 has cancelled it’s meetings for March.
  • Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce lunches are postponed until further notice.
  • The Overeaters Anonymous group is meeting by phone on Saturday mornings.  Call 617-7778 for more information.
  • Bereavement Support Group meetings.

On Prince of Wales Island

  • The following Craig City Gym activities have been cancelled: Skating and blading, volleyball, and dodgeball. The April 4th swap meet is on hold.  Karate will continue.
  • The POW Trade Show has been postponed.
  • Prince of Wales Whalefest 2020 is cancelled.

In Metlakatla, closures include:

  • The Wellness center
  • Wap Gyilks Aama Niisgn Fitness Center
  • Metlakatla Senior Center (home-delivered lunches will be provided)
  • Head Start
  • Early Head Start
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • David Leask Sr. Town Hall
  • Long House
  • The Casino
