KRBD will be getting a second full-time reporter for the first time since the mid-90s.

We applied for the Report for America program back in October, and recently learned we are one of a select group of newsrooms chosen to host a new reporter!

RFA will pay half the salary for our new reporter in the first year, and we will fundraise to pay all remaining expenses. The second year of the program, RFA will pay a third of the salary, and we must raise the rest.

Our hope is that through this opportunity, the communities we serve recognize the value of a second reporter, and will be able to provide the funds needed to sustain that level of news coverage for southern Southeast Alaska beyond the program’s two years.

KRBD’s new reporter will cover a variety of news topics, and will help with Morning Edition and newscasts, but the primary focus of the position will be areas we haven’t had the capacity to cover in depth. Specifically: our Indigenous and Asian residents, as well as communities on Prince of Wales Island.

Report for America will be taking applications for all open positions, including this one, through the end of January. They will conduct the initial review of candidates, and will select three to five finalists for us. That’s when we take over and choose our reporter from that pool of finalists – or ask RFA to please send a different batch of finalists for us to interview.

In March or April, we make our choice, and the new reporter starts in June of 2022!

If you are interested in the position, or know someone looking for a radio news reporting job, please send them to the Report for America webpage: reportforamerica.org
