A car accident on White River Rd. near Ketchikan has left one woman severely injured.
On April 7, just before 5 a.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to reports that a Ram pickup truck had gone off a steep embankment in a remote area of the Tongass National Forest over twenty miles from North Tongass Highway. The road where the accident occurred is closed and is usually only in use by a logging company in the area. Troopers say the accident occurred on Saturday evening. The driver and passenger allegedly ran into some dense fog and snow south of Leask Lake and drove off the road. They were traveling at about 35 miles per hour and the car rolled roughly 60 feet down the steep hillside.
Troopers report that both the 24-year-old male driver and the 40-year-old female passenger were able to scramble up the hill and climb back up to the road, though they had sustained serious injuries. They were found walking back towards Ketchikan by an employee of the nearby logging company, who called in emergency medical services.
According to Troopers, the female victim was ultimately medevacked to a hospital in Washington State due to the severity of her injuries. At the time of this writing, her condition is unknown. The male driver refused medical assistance at the scene.
