More candidates filed Monday, August 4, for municipal office in Ketchikan.
Alan Bailey, who previously served on the Borough Assembly from 2010 thru 2020, is running for a one-year seat on the Assembly. In January, Bailey was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Jeremy Bynum. Bynum was elected to the state legislature last November.
Also seeking a one-year term on the Assembly is former District 1 Representative Dan Ortiz, who served in the Alaska State House for a decade, from 2015 to 2025. He initially ran for reelection last year against Bynum, Agnes Moran, and Grant EchoHawk, but decided to end his campaign, citing family considerations and health concerns. He later applied for the Borough Assembly seat that Bailey was appointed to.
In addition to Bailey and Ortiz running for the one-year seat, former Assembly member Grant EchoHawk and Borough Mayor Rodney Dial are running for the two 3-year terms that are open.
Assembly member Austin Otos is running for Borough mayor.
Melissa Reed and Lindsey Johnson are running for 3-year terms on the Ketchikan School Board. There are two 3-year seats available. Paul Robbins Jr. is running for a 2-year term on the School Board. Robbins Jr. was appointed last August to fill a vacancy on the board.
While the Borough has seen a lot of filing action, as of 3 p.m. Monday, August 4, no one has filed for City office. That includes two, 3-year seats open on the City Council. Those are currently held by Abby Bradberry and Lallette Kistler.
The filing deadline for both city and borough offices is 5 pm on Monday, August 25. Municipal elections are on October 7.
