Ketchikan’s annual Blueberry Arts Festival returned this past weekend for its 50th anniversary. It kicked off on Friday, August 1, with the Pet and Doll Parade, Best Blueberry Dish contest and juried art show opening. The main event was on Saturday with food and vendor booths, street performers, a slug race and more.  KRBD’s Maria Dudzak was there and prepared this audio postcard.

Just some of the sounds from Ketchikan’s 50th annual Blueberry Arts Festival.

The voices you heard were Arts Council Executive Director Kathleen Light kicking off the Pet and Doll Parade and Michelle O’Brien announcing the big slug contest winners. The performers you heard were Ryan Sears, Peace Drummer Takumi Kato and family, AJ Slagle reciting a Robert Service poem, and music by DJ Archiepelago.

The festival continued Sunday with a hand-made, human-powered boat race and concluded with a poetry slam and lingcod limerick contest.
