A Prince of Wales jury found a Craig resident guilty of five DUI and assault charges on Friday stemming from a 2023 vehicle collision near Klawock.

Sixty-six year old John James was arrested last year after swerving into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with a vehicle. According to the state’s Department of Law, the collision left a mother seriously injured and her infant daughter also injured.

State prosecutors say that James’ blood-alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit.

According to the state, jurors found one of the assault charges against the infant aggravated by the use of a dangerous instrument. James was also found guilty of a charge for possessing firearms while impaired.

James could face seven to 11 years in prison for the lead assault charge. His sentencing is scheduled for January 26 in the Prince of Wales Courthouse.

James’ attorney, John Scott Phillips, could not immediately be reached for comment.
