The interim superintendent for Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District, PJ Ford Slack, submitted her letter of resignation to the school board yesterday. The board approved a year-long contract for Ford Slack in June, effective July 1.
Her resignation is effective on November 10 of this year.
Board President Katherine Tatsuda wrote in a statement, “As a board, we are committed to ensuring a smooth and thoughtful leadership transition. Our focus remains on providing stability for our staff, students and families as we continue the important work happening in our schools every day.”
Tatsuda said to KRBD in an email that she can not go into details about what led to the resignation. Ford Slack did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Ford Slack became interim superintendent following the resignation of former superintendent Michael Robbins and multiple board members, as the district struggles with transportation and budgetary concerns.
The letter of resignation was also announced the day before the municipal election. There are three seats up for grabs on the Ketchikan School Board. They are responsible for hiring the next superintendent.
Tatsuda said conversations about next steps will begin at the upcoming board meeting, and she expects those conversations to continue through the transition process.
