The City of Thorne Bay, a community of about 500 people on Prince of Wales Island, will soon elect a new mayor. Absentee voting for the city’s special mayoral election opened Tuesday.

Councilmembers Anthony Lovell and Timber Pesterfield are vying for the seat. Pesterfield has served as the city’s acting mayor since Shane Nyquest resigned in February. Citizens signed a petition to recall Nyquest last fall, which was submitted to the city clerk in December. Nyquest now serves on the city council.

Thorne Bay residents can submit their absentee ballots through May 11. Residents can also vote in person on May 12 at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or Davidson Landing from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The winning candidate will assume his mayoral role on May 18. The new mayor will serve through November.
