Alaska state ferry Columbia tied up for repairs

UPDATE: Friday, June 23 —

“Vigor removed the leaky valve manifold and is fabricating a new one. They are on schedule for installation and testing on Monday, June 26. Divers inspected the bow thruster and no blockages or obstructions were located. The bow thruster issue required consulting its UK-based manufacturer, and was narrowed down to a sensor called a potentiometer. The sensor is functional, but due to loose clamps, it had rotated approximately 90 degrees, causing a fault. The sensor is being repositioned and they’ll test the bow thruster today.”

Transboundary Indigenous group declares salmon emergency

Tribes in Southeast Alaska and across the border in Canada have declared an emergency for salmon facing environmental risks. Leaders with the Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission made the announcement at the 4th Annual Indigenous Leaders Summit in Washington last week. The transboundary commission represents 15 Tsimshian, Tlingit, and Haida Nations.

Ketchikan man pleads guilty to running ‘Anything Goes’ child porn ring

Federal prosecutors say Walter William Onstad admitted to leading a private chat group called “Anything Goes” that distributed child porn online. As its administrator, Onstad allegedly solicited and approved both members and images on the group, run through the messaging app, Kik.

Woman arrested in Metlakatla on murder charges in death of son and brother

James Henderson was taken to a local clinic and pronounced dead. The boy died the following evening after he was medevaced to Anchorage for his injuries. The boy’s father was also wounded but survived.

Alaska’s new ferry director says reliability is his priority
