Prince of Wales Island, in southern Southeast Alaska, is home to less than 6,000 people. But the sparsely populated island is also home to Alaska’s only known arm wrestling club.

The amount of 911 calls placed each year in Ketchikan has more than doubled since the turn of the century, sometimes overwhelming the city’s emergency personnel staff and volunteers. But a renewed class at Ketchikan High School is looking to address staffing needs by qualifying students to become EMTs.

If you visited Ketchikan’s Totem Heritage Center this fall, you may have noticed something missing from one of its outside walls. That’s because three carved posts, which were made by students and master carvers, were temporarily removed for much-needed restoration work.

Invasive European green crabs were first detected in Alaska three years ago, on Annette Island in southern Southeast. The number of green crabs trapped on the island has since exploded, and they’re spreading throughout the region.
