Alaska has one of the highest rates of fatal drug overdoses in the country, but addiction treatment services in Southeast are limited. The Ketchikan Indian Community is looking to change that by opening the state’s first tribally-led addiction healing center.

Moses Scott Blanchard, 25, was sentenced on Monday to 60 years in jail with 20 years suspended for his role in the murder of 80-year-old Lincoln Peratrovich.

The joint effort, which was months in the making, promotes a unified approach to addressing regional tribal concerns while acknowledging each tribe’s individual differences.

Ketchikan artist Christy Ruby was recently awarded a Rasmuson Foundation grant to build a small-scale tannery for processing seal and sea otter hides. She hopes the grant will be a steppingstone to building a larger tannery.
