Alaska Native Tribes pressure Canada for rights in Unuk River mining project

Tribes near Ketchikan submitted evidence Jan. 30 to the Canadian and British Columbia governments that they hope will give them a voice in transboundary mining discussions. The tribes say the evidence proves they’ve had a historical presence along the Unuk River, which runs through the border.

Alaska congressional delegation introduces legislation to settle Cape Fox’s land entitlement

U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan and Representative Mary Peltola introduced legislation Jan. 19 that seeks to forego a unique restriction in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). The bill aims to settle a decades-old dispute that has prevented the Cape Fox Corporation from claiming all of the land they are entitled to under the act.

Alaska National Guard headed to Ketchikan to talk fentanyl

The Alaska National Guard will join community discussions about the growing presence of fentanyl in Ketchikan. Feb. 5 and 6, the National Guard’s counterdrug and civil support team will be deployed to Alaska’s “First City” to meet with emergency services and members of the public about fentanyl awareness and prevention.

ADF&G releases 2023 GMU2 wolf harvest numbers

The 2023 wolf trapping season in Game Management Unit 2, which includes Prince of Wales Island and outlying islands, concluded December 15. Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported that the total wolf harvest for the month long season was 70 wolves.
