Experts: Testing algae blooms not good science

Experts pretty much agree with the overall message of a recent warning from the state Department of Health and Social Services: Don’t eat personally harvested shellfish, ever. The science methods cited by the state, however, have raised the eyebrows of a couple of aquaculture researchers. They say high toxin levels in algae blooms don’t necessarily mean poisonous shellfish.

NOAA survey done

NOAA scientists have completed the Southeast phase of a survey effort, looking for marine debris along Alaska’s coast, including possible debris from last year’s Japanese tsunami.

Hyder woman still missing

Rescue workers continued looking Friday for 60-year-old Cathleen Currie of Hyder, but might suspend the search soon. Currie was reported missing from her camp on the Salmon River near the Southeast Alaska community of Hyder, which is on the mainland next to the Canada border.
