City officials maintain that the water is safe to drink.

Nick Nickerson, Klawock’s mayor and a member of Klawock Heenya’s board of directors, said the port just isn’t ready yet.

Over the two-day event, held at Thunder Mountain High School, Team Ketchikan pulled in two first place finishes, a third place finish, and two fourth place spots.

After months of advocating for changes to the plan, residents are now worried about what their town will look like once cutting begins.

“It makes me so incredibly happy,” Elli Flagg said. “These kids here are, they’re wonderful.”
