The red clothes are a tangible reminder of real lives lost — each one representing Indigenous people who were murdered or are still missing. Most of them disappeared before they were due to be taken down. 

A toxicology screening confirmed Garcia died of a morphine overdose. He also had lorazepam, diazepam and methadone in his system. 

Ketchikan police found Dr. Eric Garcia, 58, dead at his home in March of 2017, after Jordan Joplin called asking for a welfare check.

“The $10,000 for first place, that’s chump change,” race boss Jesse Wiegel said. “Really what you’re after is the steak knives.”
