Cruise ship scrubbers court controversy over water pollution

Cruise ships are now returning to Alaska for the first full-length season since the pandemic. For the past two years, CoastAlaska has been investigating the impact of “scrubbers” – air pollution control systems that allow large ships to save money by burning cheaper, dirtier fuels. It found that EPA has granted special waivers for Carnival-owned ships’ scrubbers to exceed the normal water pollution standards while in Alaska waters.

The governor’s chief of staff says the Dunleavy administration is working to leverage federal infrastructure dollars to revitalize the Alaska Marine Highway System. Federal dollars have helped the state forward fund the ferry for 18 months, though Dunleavy vetoed about $8.5 million of the state’s appropriation earlier this summer.
