Kayhi debate team places second at state

Ketchikan High School performed well in last weekend’s Debate Drama and Forensics state competition in Anchorage.
According to Coach Dan Ortiz, Ketchikan entered three teams in the Public Forum Debate category, which had a total of 31 teams competing.
Two of the Kayhi teams made it to the semi-final round, and one of those teams — Cheyenne Matthews and Sam Ortiz – made it into the final debate. They lost by just one vote in the final round to a team from West Anchorage.
A dead sea lion that washed up on the beach at Refuge Cove was dissected Thursday in hopes of finding out what caused the death. The necropsy took several hours, and attracted many observers. But it didn’t provide any clear answers. more
The Ketchikan School Board gathered for an informal goal setting session Wednesday evening. The Board took advantage of the discussion to express concern over its relationship with the Borough to a member of the Association of Alaska School Boards. more
