House District 36 Rep.-elect Dan Ortiz has joined Anchorage Rep. Les Gara to pre-file a bill that would lower the state’s student loan rate.

According to an announcement from the House Democratic Caucus, the Alaska Student Loan Corporation charges 6.7 percent interest for college or job training loans. The current federal student loan interest rate is 4.66 percent.

The announcement says that under the terms of the proposed bill, students who stay in Alaska or move back would receive a 2.5 percent reduction on their student loan rates.

The student loan reduction bill will receive committee assignments after the 29 Alaska Legislative session begins on Tuesday. That’s also when Ortiz will take the oath of office.
