Downtown streets are prepped for paving.

Paving of streets in the downtown area is scheduled for next week.  City of Ketchikan Public Works Director Mark Hilson says though parking will not be allowed, streets will remain open to traffic for the rest of the week and weekend.

“But they will remain in the milled condition until the asphalt plant starts up on Monday, and we start paving.”

Hilson says the downtown core will be paved first, followed by East 5th Street. He anticipates paving of Main, Dock, Bawden and Mission Streets will be completed by Wednesday, weather permitting.

“Because, this is what we call the ‘wearing course,’ it’s the final course on the road, we need it to be dry in order for it to stick to the layers below.”

Hilson says streets will be closed during paving, and reopen at the end of the day after the paving has cooled. The current weather forecast predicts a chance of rain on Monday.
