A 26-year-old Ketchikan woman was killed Sunday afternoon following a single-vehicle car accident on North Tongass Highway.

According to the Alaska State Troopers online dispatch report, the accident happened at about 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of North Tongass and Pond Reef Road. Troopers say the driver of the vehicle lost control, struck a guard rail and then struck a tree. Troopers report there were three people in the vehicle, including the driver.

Michelle Verney was one of the passengers. She was taken by emergency responders to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. Next of kin have been notified.  

The driver and other passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Troopers didn’t have information about the severity of their injuries. 

Troopers are still investigating the accident.
