The Department of Environmental Conservation lifted the advisory for Knudson  Cove in Ketchikan because enterococci  bacteria levels are now within the state’s limit for safe recreation.  Enterococci bacteria can cause stomach upset and infections.

Two weeks of samples show water consistently meeting water quality standards.

Three beaches, including South Point Higgins Beach, Rotary Pool and Herring Cove have fecal coliform bacteria levels above state limits. Because elevated levels have not been persistent, an advisory is not in effect for those beaches.  DEC does recommend when fishing in these areas, people should rinse fish and marine foods with clean water and cook seafood to a minimum internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
