A 40-year-old Ketchikan man faces arson and assault charges after allegedly trying to set a home on fire Saturday in Saxman.

According to the online Alaska State Troopers dispatch report, troopers and the Saxman Village Public Safety Officer responded a little after 8 p.m.  Saturday to a report of a disturbance at a home on South Tongass Highway in Saxman.

The report states that Robert Pickrell was allegedly attempting to set the residence on fire, and was pouring gasoline inside. Three other people were inside the home at the time.

Troopers say Pickrell was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted arson, and three counts of third-degree assault. Pickrell had his first court appearance on Sunday. His next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 18th.

Troopers report that South Tongass Fire Department personnel took control of the residence to make sure it was safe.
