Hunters on federal land on Prince of Wales Island will be limited to two male deer this season, unless they are federally qualified as subsistence hunters.

The Craig/Thorne Bay District Ranger issued that emergency special action to restrict the harvest limit on federally-managed public lands in Unit 2.

The order is effective immediately and will expire in 60 days, or when new subsistence wildlife regulations are published in the Federal Register, whichever happens first.

According to a Thursday announcement from the U.S. Forest Service, the district ranger based this decision on extensive public testimony and traditional knowledge provided to the Federal Subsistence Board. Those comments indicated that subsistence needs for deer had not been met in the past.
