The Craig-Klawock Highway was closed for several hours Monday after a couple hundred gallons of waste oil fell off a Craig city truck.

Craig City Clerk Jillian Carl says a container carrying about 250 gallons of waste oil broke free from the vehicle.

“Our city employees responded immediately to the spill and took measures to prevent the waste oil from reaching the saltwater nearby, the South Cove Harbor,” she said Monday.

She says the cleanup effort by city crews continued into Tuesday morning. Crews used absorbent pads, boom and other agents to keep the spill from reaching the water. The incident was reported to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
