Update: Peter Vansell was acquitted of the charges described below after a jury trial in February 2022, Ketchikan District Attorney Kristian Pickrell said in an emailed statement. KRBD has also reached out to Vansell’s attorney for comment.
The Ketchikan Police Department says they arrested a man this week on a felony charge of first-degree sexual assault.
Police identify the suspect as 36-year-old Peter Vansell of San Diego. A sworn statement filed in court by Ketchikan police states that Vansell and his alleged victim were in a brief relationship in 2015. Police say the two met up on Sunday, and the assault occurred that night in Vansell’s hotel room.
Vansell’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Vansell is due back in court Monday. He’s being held in the Ketchikan Correctional Center on $15,000 bail.
