Three days of rainfall drenched parts of Prince of Wales Island over the weekend, resulting in the closure of Sandy Beach Road to Coffman Cove.

The closure is located about one mile north of the junction of Roads 30 and 3030, and four miles south of the turn to Luck Lake.

Thorne Bay District Ranger Rachelle Huddleston-Lorton says in a Forest Service announcement that 6 inches of rain over three days caused significant road damage.

She says the Forest Service still is assessing storm damage, including washouts and downed trees. She recommends caution when driving in the area.
