The Alaska Department of Transportation has scheduled a series of community meetings related to fiscal challenges facing the Alaska Marine Highway System.

All state agencies are working with reduced operating budgets due to low oi-tax revenue. According to DOT, this will affect all transportation funding, including the ferries that serve coastal Alaska.

During the six planned meetings, DOT officials will provide information, take questions and present options regarding short and long-term solutions for the ferry system.

In Ketchikan, the meeting is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 2nd at the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly chambers at the White Cliff building.

Other meetings are scheduled in Sitka, Cordova, Kodiak, Juneau and Haines.

Each meeting will be available via teleconference for anyone who can’t attend in person. The toll free number to participate is: 1-800-315-6338, conference code 03902#. The line will open five minutes prior to the scheduled start time for each meeting.
