A hunter on Prince of Wales has been hospitalized after being rescued near Red Bay on the north side of the island. Robert Patten, age 61, was reported missing to the Alaska State Troopers around 8:15 p.m Friday.
Patten and two other hunters reportedly began hiking Red Bay Mountain at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night and planned to camp at the top of the alpine for the deer season opener. Patten decided to turn back because of health conditions. When the other two hikers returned to their vehicles Friday there was no sign of Patten. Troopers notified the U.S. Coast Guard, who located and rescued Patten at around 2 a.m. Saturday.
The Coast Guard wasn’t able to land in Klawock due to weather. They re-routed to Petersburg where Patten was transported to a local hospital.
