An introductory course in mining is available to Alaska high school students through a cooperative program run by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, University of Alaska Southeast, and Alaska’s Learning Network.

Ketchikan’s own Santa and Mrs. Claus are the 2013 Citizens of the Year, an honor announced at Saturday’s annual Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce awards banquet.

Citing concerns over funding, the Ketchikan City Council decided Thursday night to move slowly and carefully forward with plans to renovate the downtown Centennial Building.

One of Ketchikan’s best-known residents, who also is a senior advocate and a former Citizen of the Year spoke at Wednesday’s Chamber of Commerce lunch. He talked a little about Ketchikan’s history, but he focused on what life’s like now for people of a certain age.

In a special meeting Thursday, the Ketchikan City Council will look at ideas for renovating the downtown Centennial Building.
