Council to consider SEAPA streamlining report

A report calling for streamlining operations at the two Southeast Alaska Power Agency hydroelectric dams is back on the table for Thursday’s regular Ketchikan City Council meeting.

Parnell: Design smaller ferries, build them here

Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell announced Tuesday in Ketchikan that the state will immediately begin negotiations with the Ketchikan shipyard to design the first of at least two smaller ferries for the Alaska Marine Highway System, rather than the 350-foot ferry that had been planned.

Assembly moves forward with $2.5M Whitman grant

Ketchikan’s long-planned Whitman Lake hydroelectric dam project is a little closer to getting built, after the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly introduced a grant Monday to help the city with construction costs.

SEARHC eye clinic opens on Prince of Wales

A new eye care clinic has opened on Prince of Wales Island. The clinic, operated by Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, opened Nov. 19th, and is located in the Klawock Mall.

Comment period opens for Dargon Point EA

The Tongass National Forest is seeking comments on a proposed commercial thinning project on Prince of Wales Island. The project, Dargon Point, is a young-growth timber project. According to the Forest Service, it is part of a broader effort to transition from old-growth to young-growth harvest.
