Big Thorne public meetings set for Ketchikan, POW

The U.S. Forest Service has scheduled three public meetings to share information about the planned Big Thorne timber sale. The first one is Wednesday in Ketchikan.

USFS announces 150 mmbf Big Thorne sale on POW

Tongass National Forest Supervisor Forrest Cole announced the Record of Decision for the Big Thorne Timber Sale Monday, calling for a harvest of nearly 150 million board feet, coming from more than 6,000 acres of old growth and more than 2,000 acres of second growth forest on Prince of Wales Island.

The Bus to start new routes/schedule this week

As local riders probably are aware, the borough bus system has been consistently late during the visitor season, for the second year in a row. Transit Department officials hope to improve the service with some route adjustments that will debut on Wednesday.

Proposal floated for Saxman fire protection

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly is scheduled Monday to consider an ordinance adding the City of Saxman to the South Tongass Fire and EMS Service Area, and placing the issue on the October ballot.
