New service area likely will be on Oct. 1 ballot

Saxman and South Tongass residents are one step closer to voting on a ballot measure that would combine their fire and EMS service areas, but keep their water service separate. The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly voted unanimously Monday to approve a first reading of an ordinance placing the issue on the Oct. 1 ballot.

Tongass National Forest Supervisor Forrest Cole announced the Record of Decision for the Big Thorne Timber Sale Monday, calling for a harvest of nearly 150 million board feet, coming from more than 6,000 acres of old growth and more than 2,000 acres of second growth forest on Prince of Wales Island.

The Bus to start new routes/schedule this week

As local riders probably are aware, the borough bus system has been consistently late during the visitor season, for the second year in a row. Transit Department officials hope to improve the service with some route adjustments that will debut on Wednesday.
