In a special meeting Saturday, the Ketchikan City Council selected Glen Adams to oversee municipal government operations.

After two Prince of Wales Island tribal organizations challenged Ketchikan’s rural status, the Federal Subsistence Board on Friday voted to sustain the designation. Ketchikan was reclassified as rural by the board in 2025.

Public comment is accepted until May 15.

It includes a cut of over 50 staff members and the closure of two schools in an effort to cut back on costs and pay back millions in debt. 

Two tribal groups are asking the Federal Subsistence Board to reverse Ketchikan’s rural designation, which went into effect last year. The board will decide this week if the request meets the criteria for a full consideration process.
