Ketchikan’s municipal election is on October 6.

We asked candidates running for borough assembly, school board and city council their stances on some of the most relevant issues facing our community to help you get informed. You can find their answers below.

City council candidate forum – Sept. 27 – 12 p.m.

Borough assembly candidate forum – Sept. 28 – 12 p.m.

School board candidate forum – Sept. 29 – 12 p.m.

There is one ballot proposition on the borough ballot. It asks voters if the borough should be granted areawide library powers. Right now, that power belongs to the city.

Here’s the full language of ballot proposition no.1 on the borough ballot:

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough’s nonareawide library powers (outside the Cities of Ketchikan and Saxman) were adopted through voter approval in 1985. Resolution  3196-CI proposes to adopt library powers on an areawide basis. If this proposition is approved, the Ketchikan Public Library assets and the responsibility for operations and funding would be transferred from the City of Ketchikan to the Borough. Shall the Ketchikan Gateway Borough be granted a new areawide power to provide public library services on an areawide basis in the area of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, as proposed in Resolution 3196-CI?

City residents will also be able to vote on an additional ballot proposition on the city ballot. 

Here’s the full language of ballot proposition no.1 on the city ballot:

To pay costs of the acquisition, construction, reconstruction, repair, improvement, extension, enlargement and/or equipment of various electric utility facilities, including Bailey Generator, Port West Substation, Bailey Substation, Mountain Point Substation, Electric Division Service Center, and Ward Cove Substation (the “Projects”), shall the City issue and sell revenue bonds in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $25,000,000 maturing within a maximum term of not more than 20 years from their issue date, the principal of and interest on which shall be payable solely from revenues of Ketchikan Public Utilities, all as provided in more detail in Resolution No.26-3032 of the City Council?
