New, expanded bus schedule debuts Monday

Starting Monday, Ketchikan’s bus system is expanding service north, south and within city limits. There are some tradeoffs, though.

Background checks for volunteer chaperones

The Ketchikan School Board Wednesday night approved required background checks for volunteer chaperones on overnight school-sponsored trips. The policy recommendation came from the newly formed Student Safety Committee.

To fish, or not to fish

The Ketchikan City Council meets Thursday, and among the topics on the agenda is a discussion about fishing off the Stedman Street Bridge, and whether to regulate that activity.

School Board to vote on background checks

The Board will vote on whether to require background checks for volunteer chaperones on overnight trips. The recommendation came from a school safety committee formed earlier this year. If the Board approves the change, it will go into effect in the upcoming school year.

Third Ave development now under city review

City Manager Karl Amylon writes that the plans don’t adequately address surface drainage or on-site waste disposal. Both of those could affect downhill property. Plus, he says the access road already has been damaged by development activity.
